As you look through the SRDS directory, you'll see hundreds of potential markets. Does the narrow focus of some available lists give you ideas for products? One compiling firm can give you a list of people sorted by birth dates. You could sell T-shirts and coffee mugs with deprecating slogans about turning 30, 40, 50, and so on. Does a look at your customers' characteristics give you ideas for additional products or services you could develop for them? If your business is strictly mail-order, direct response lists are your most important source of potential customers. Direct response lists are populated with people who have responded favorably to offers. Your job is to find people who have responded to offers similar to yours.

After you've studied the directory and selected some promising lists, you can call the firms that manage the lists and ask for data cards. When you review a list directory and data cards, you need to consider a variety of factors about each list. SBeyond that, you should narrow your search even further by using geo-demographics and other information often provided with rental lists; this allows you to try to match your customer profile.
