The above processing is not extremely expensive, and it saves you money on postage by allowing you to qualify for the postal discounts. Merge/purge processing costs vary from about $2 to $12 per thousand, depending on the quantity and complexity. ZIP sorts and some types of suppression are included in the cost. NCOA and DSF processing is offered by vendors throughout the United States. Service bureaus that do not offer the service directly can obtain it for you.

 

In addition to these services, considered routine by major mailers, are some more costly techniques to augment your house or prospecting lists. Several of the largest list compilers such as ABI and Metromail offer enhancement services. Your list is compared to the compiler's database and information such as ages, income levels, and education is added to the records of people on your list.

PrizmTM, from Claritas Corp., is a program which separates the United States into more than 500,000 neighborhoods and places each in one of 40 different categories based on demographic and behavioral analysis.

 

One way to use Prizm, or similar geo-demographic clustering, is to analyze your house list attaching Prizm codes to each customer. Then you identify the cluster types or lifestyle categories of your best customers. When you go shopping for lists, some compilers and list managers offer Prizm clusters as a select. You buy the addresses of people who have the same cluster codes as your prime customers.
