Response Lists - Facts:

If several mailers ask for continuations from the same list, that's a good indication that the list has responsive people on it. Compilers also offer business lists, organized by standard industrial code (SIC). Again the emphasis is on large quantities, but depending on the list, various background information is usually available on each company.

 

Lists of just about any business imaginable are available, from Thai restaurants to used brick dealers to industrial hygiene consultants. Paging through catalogs from large compiling firms can give you market ideas as well. Some compiler catalogs are 75 to 100 pages long.

 

When renting compiled lists from more than one source you need to guard against renting the same list twice. Compilers may obtain lists from the same sources, such as directories and membership lists, but identify the lists differently. In addition, some big compilers wholesale their lists to smaller firms that resell them. If you just use labels for your mailings and do no computer analysis of rental lists, you might never notice the duplication.

If you're looking for a specific group of people and you can find a business directory, membership list, or other source that contains the names you need, you can create your own list.

 

This should not be treated as your house list, because these people have not bought from you yet, but you won't have any limitations on use of the list as you would if you rented it. Many business organizations, chambers of commerce, and community and civic clubs have membership lists available.

 

Some organizations go a step further and sell address labels of members. Most government records are public information and, given the time, you could compile your own local lists based on business licenses, homes purchased, business consolidations, liquor licenses, and many other categories.
