The 900 phone number is a medium of unfulfilled promises. Seemingly, 900 numbers are tailor-made for direct marketing. Customers call to hear information on a recording or to place an order. Then the phone company bills them for the call, collects the money, and sends it to the marketer. Two techniques are used for 900-number programs; you earn income with both. In the passive programs, you provide information on a recording and customers are billed automatically each time they call.
Passive phone services include sports update programs, news and information lines, and horoscopes. In interactive 900 programs, your customer service representatives talk to callers, taking orders, providing information, and making note of callers' names and addresses to send them merchandise or product/service information. Again, callers are billed per call. This latter service is a new way marketers can add names to their databases and have the callers subsidize the costs.
