When you mail to segments of more than one list, you will want to cross-reference or compare each list to eliminate duplicates. This is done by a computer merge/purge operation. Since people who respond to direct mail often order from more than one company, duplications are common, often amounting to 10 to 15 percent.

When a merge/purge process reduces a given list, you should not have to pay for those names you will not use because they already appear on another list, possibly your house list. List managers usually will agree ahead of time to cut costs by 15 percent off the top to compensate for duplicates identified in a merge/purge, but they are often reluctant to grant further reductions, regardless of how many names are actually used. Unfortunately, if you are renting a small quantity of names you don't have a strong bargaining position.
